THE idea of a railway linking Cinderford and Lydney – mooted last week as a vital component in the 'Golden Rainbow' quarry project – is worthy of further investigation, says Cinderford Town Council chairman Tim Holder.
Mr Holder plans to ask members of The East Dean Initiative to discuss the possibilities at their next meeting.
"It could be a long-term aim but I can see a lot of merit in a railway through the Forest. It could run through to a point to the west of the town using the old route and could easily be served as a park-and-ride facility," said Mr Holder.
Commenting on the success of the Dean Forest Railway, he said the woodland link had the potential to attract thousands of visitors.
Mr Holder said that the old track bed was still in place over much of the route.
"I appreciate there will be obstacles but if the will was there I can imagine it could be a winner. We are talking into the future but it is a possibility and it is well worth investigation," he said.
•The Review has received a number of calls about the possibility of a rail link and all were positive and in favour.
A number of callers doubted the feasibility of running a track to the quarry.
