VILLAGERS in the little community of English Bicknor say speed-mad drivers must be stopped before someone is killed.

There is already a 30mph limit through the village, which lies beside the main road from Coleford to Ross-on-Wye, but villagers say it is persistently ignored, with some travelling through at speeds as high as 80mph.

Yet there are many elderly people in the village and the local primary school lies just beside the road.

"They have already run over my cat. I am very afraid it may be a person next time. The whole community is very upset about it," said Jo Hopkins, whose daughter Hermoine, two and a half, will be attending the school in future.

"Though we have the 30mph signs at each end of the village it seems to make no difference at all."

She said all types of vehicles were involved, even coaches. It was hard to see what the solution was but appeals to common sense did not seem to work. Perhaps speed traps or prosecutions would help, and they were looking into obtaining a speed detector to build up evidence.
