HAVING the gift of a long memory has helped Forest-born Mrs Sylvia Auty put more pieces into the jigsaw of Forest history.

Aged 76, Mrs Auty, of Bents Lane, Drybrook, clearly recalls her childhood and, encouraged by family and friends, decided to put her memories into words.

The result is a booklet of fascinating stories which will stir memories for many local people.

Mrs Auty told the Review: "I'm lucky to have a good memory. For instance I can clearly recall Miss Ethel Cole who was the headmistress of St John's Church of England School in Boxbush Road. She was quite a character and perhaps a bit formidable to some of the pupils."

Mrs Auty, born Sylvia Jenkins in Coleford's Albert Road, has also written at some length about the businesses which operated in Coleford during her childhood and youth.

Though she has lived in her present house for 30 years, Mrs Auty clearly recalls many of the people who lived in the Bishopswood and Kerne Bridge areas.

"I spent many hours with by grandparents who lived in a little cottage there. That little cottage is now a big house but I have lots of memories of staying there and of the characters who lived round and about. I remember my grandfather making cider," she said.

Mrs Auty said the booklet had been applauded by friends several of whom were now thinking of producing similar works.

Just 50 copies of the booklet have been printed. They cost £2 and may be obtained from Mrs Auty at 2. Harrow View, Bents Lane, Drybrook GL17 9AS.
