IN response to Mr Ron Tocknell's letter ('Hounded for licence,' September 23, 2011) regarding TV Licensing (and a recent article concerning the now resolved situation of Mr Derek Probert), I would like to clarify a number of points.

A TV Licence is legally required for watching or recording TV programmes at the same time as they are broadcast, regardless of the equipment you are using or how you receive those programmes. All our mailings make this very clear.

The majority of people pay their TV Licence on a regular basis but there will always be some who need to be reminded of the consequences of not buying one. We do our best not to trouble genuine non-viewers but we have a duty to enforce the law. However, with over 30 million addresses on our database, errors can sometimes occur. Once we are made aware, we always try to correct these as quickly as possible.

We ask those who do not need a licence to contact us and let us know. Once we have verified this we won't contact you for two years and will then just get in touch to check your circumstances have not changed.
