I HAVE received copies of the comments replying to my letter in the Review concerning the bowls club at the Angus Buchanan Recreation Ground. The remarks have been noted.
In reply to J Gowerton of Swansea, all the items such as the toilet block, water fountain, flower beds, tennis courts and golf club are irrelevant to the present situation.
I refute his statement that the bowls club is the most used, for every time I visit and walk through this wonderful oasis there is the sound of children using the playground but no-one on the bowls green.
Admittedly it has been very wet. Even so I've seen children on the apparatus in the rain. He seems to have overlooked the fact that my letter told the public domain from where I got this information – park users, dog walkers, the general public. Is he inferring that all these people are liars?
The 38 acres he refers to cannot be signed off willy-nilly and all charitable trusts have to get the best return for their assets. This is certainly not the case when the bowls club pays only £75 a year for rent. It would be logical for the Trust to use the pavilion which, I am told, they own. The pavilion is the brick-built bungalow, not the clubhouse as some reports have shown.
In reply to DC Broughton I can assure him that you will see more correspondence from me and I will keep coming to the Forest. Doesn't this area, which I treasure, need revenue in the present climate or isn't my money good enough?
The sweeping statements he refers to have not been told by liars as they have been repeated by different people at different times. They can't all be wrong.
I also refute that my letter blamed the bowls club for the behaviour of the troublemakers. My letter certainly did not denigrate this establishment. As he says, the only alternative is the hotel/bowls/golf complex. I think Coleford is large enough to warrant two bowls clubs. Comparing the two clubs, I know where I would go.
I said the £75 was derogatory and I seem to remember from my press cuttings that the chairman offered thousands for the rent. So it seems, in my opinion the Trust has been subsidising the bowls club for many years and the club cannot expect to carry on paying £75.
I shall certainly look forward to visiting my relatives in the Forest for many years and when I go to the park I will definitely call in at the tea rooms. I wish the Trust every success in its venture.
