In 2011 I compared Lydney Bus Station to "a third world eyesore".
In March 2012 I gave the Lydney "Transport Hub" the thumbs up in a picture and report in the Review.
In this positive item I said that Lydney Dial A Ride would become Forest Community Transport and take over the lease on the building plus carrying out renovation. Also that their Dial A Ride charity shop would be housed there with possible waiting area for bus passengers. Headline was "Posh Forest hub". All excellent news and fair play to Dial A Ride at their expansion and development of new bus routes.
In August 2012 I asked Dial A Ride for an update as the eyesore went completely blind and lost its way. The helpful manager said that contractors would be working soon and that they were working to a completion date of March 2013. The existing lease runs out on March 31, 2013. Buses will continue to stop there, Forest Community Transport vehicles will park behind the building, the shop will go in but no public loos or separate waiting area. There may be a few seats but shoppers would be more "acceptable" than people sitting inside.
I spoke to the guy who was putting in smart double glazing a few days ago and he gave me an update that they were all ahead of schedule and soon the "cosmetic" cladding and smart branding would alter this eyesore into Brighteyes.
I am concerned that as a "Forest Transport Hub" this expensive refurb still leaves us passengers standing out in all weathers and at the mercy of 'no show' buses without shelter or a bench to rest on. At present we all herd together on a narrow strip of pavement waiting with no shelter or timetables and feeling dangerously close to passing traffic.
Mums with babies and toddlers, elderly folk with wheelers, people with heavy shopping, workers – we all pay taxes and fares.
Please Trustees of Forest Community Transport can some of your funding go towards at least a row of benches under the canopy of the gleaming new "Hub" for the passengers. As a gateway to Lydney first impressions surely count for visitors en route to Chepstow or Gloucester often with luggage. I have never been in any bus station without a sitting area – even in Tel Aviv.
I hope to bring good news soon re new buses.
