A WASTE recycling centre is proving so popular that managers have had to make temporary closures to cope with the volume of rubbish being dumped.

Residents have recently been turned away from the town tip beside Monmouth’s A40 Gibraltar Tunnels as staff try to remove overflowing skips and recycling bins from the site.

And Monmouthshire County Council is now urging people to sign up the new ‘My Monmouthshire App’, a digital tool which will let them receive alerts and information about closures at the Viridor-run site, as well as other information.

Rachel Jowitt, head of waste and street ser-

vices, said: “Monmouthshire County Council and Viridor would like to thank all the users of the recycling site for their patience and their continued efforts to make Monmouthshire a county of recycling excellence.

“We apologise for recent closures, but we are continuously aware of the importance of health and safety of both our residents and staff at the site. By closing it, we have peace of mind that everyone is safe.

“Recent closures have taken place due to an increase in waste at the site which has led to skips and recycling bins being removed more frequently in recent weeks. “Monmouthshire County Council and Viridor understand that the site is very well used and highly regarded by residents in the Monmouth area.”

She added: “The app is constantly being updated according to the needs of our residents. To help users of the Troy site, specific alerts for residents are being explored, to make information available as early as possible to avoid disruption at the site, to its contractors and most importantly the public.

“My Monmouthshire can be accessed via the app or through the council website.

Due to the nature of the reporting tool, within My Monmouthshire we have been made aware of a variety of things by residents that are currently being actioned and these are a priority at the moment.”

Information about closures is also available via posters at the recycling centre, the council website and Monmouthshire social media channels.
