THE rare distinction of a vice-presidency was awarded to historian Keith Walker at the annual meeting of the Forest of Dean Local History Society held at the West Dean Centre, Bream, on Saturday (October 8).

Mr Walker, of Lancaster Drive, Lydney, was applauded for his dedication to the society. He has served as a member of the committee for 25 years, holding many important posts including a 10-year stint as treasurer. He remains editor of the society’s award-winning quarterly newsletter.

Other vice-presidents are Barbara Griffith, Averil Kear, Ian Standing and Ian Pope.

Mr Pope, the guest speaker for the afternoon, presented Mr Walker with a certificate and spoke of his commitment to the society and his input and research which had led to a number of articles in The New Regard, the society’s annual journal.

An article by Mr Walker on roads created by the Crown in the Forest was judged the best in last year’s Regard for which he received the Cyril Hart Award.

The Forest’s deputy gaveller, Mr Dan Howell, was awarded the Gladys Scott-Garrett Award for the best presentation and talk of the last year.

Simon Moore, who ws re-elected chairman for a third year, said membership had grown to more than 300.
