CONCERN is mounting about the dangers created by abandoned needles used by drug takers in the centre of Lydney.

Roy Haffenden, who runs his own cleaning business, has the task of keeping the area around Hylton Court in Lydney's Newerne Street in pristine condition. But he has become worried and concerned about the massive rise in drug abuse – and the huge number of needles thrown down by users.

He told the Review: "I've got grandchildren growing up in the Forest of Dean and it has really shocked me.

"I find needles all the time, and it is obvious there is a serious drug problem in the Forest. I have told the police and members of the council. I know they are really busy, but what could be more important than this?" he asked.

Mr Haffenden is concerned youngsters could find needles he has missed.

"There is potential for a very serious accident here. If any young children find them we could have a very big problem. It must be dealt with," he said.

Mr Haffenden said the Hylton Court site was close to a CCTV camera but was constantly defaced by empty beer cans.

"People are asking what the cameras really do pick up. We never hear of any prosecutions when it is obvious things are going on here that should not be," he said.
