TRIBUTES have been paid to two vintage car fans who died in an early morning collision with an ambulance while taking a classic Ford to a Bank Holiday show.

Workmates and friends of Jason Allen, 49, from Lea Bailey near Mitcheldean, and Andrew Ralph, 61, from Malvern, both died at the scene on Sunday, August 25, after the 1930s car they were travelling in crashed on the A49 near Ross-on-Wye.

Paying tribute to the driver, brother Jeremy Allen said: “Jason Allen was taken tragically from us early on the morning of Sunday, August 25 while driving his 1930 Ford Model A coupe vintage car to Onslow Park Steam Rally near Shrewsbury.

“He had a flawless 30+ year HGV driving career and in his spare time lived for all things vintage with his collection of classic lorries and cars. He made an impression on everyone he met through his life and will be sadly missed by his entire family and friends.

“His good friend Andrew Ralph travelling with him also lost his life and our deepest sympathies go to his family.”

In a statement, Andrew Ralph’s family said: “Andy - known as Rabbit - was a family man who had been around transport his entire life as a professional HGV driver.

“Andy loved all things vintage and always made time for his family and friends with a smile and a chat. We will miss him dearly.”

Bosses at Ledbury haulage firm ABE where they both worked said they were “devastated” by the news.

“It is with great sadness we post the shocking news that two of our long serving drivers, Andrew Ralph (whom many of you will know as Rabbit) and Jason Allen, died together in a tragic car accident on Sunday 25th August,” a statement said.

“We consider ourselves fortunate to have worked along side them. We are devastated.

“Our thoughts are with their families and friends at this terrible time.”

The collision with the ambulance, which was not responding tona 999 call, happened in Peterstow, close to the Pengethley Garden Centre around 6am.

Skid marks on the road, a burnt verge and hedge and broken glass indicate the force of the crash.

A man and woman with two children were among those who left floral tributes at the scene.

One card read: “Jason, thoughts are with your family. Another life taken too soon. The Coopers.”

Another tribute read: “Rabbit, I will never forget all the memories we all had, you taught me to live life to the full. See you soon, love Lauren.”

Another added: “Rabbit, another one gone too soon. We are all heartbroken.”

A further tribute said: “Will never forget you Rabbit. A great mate, love Clive, George, Elsie and Margaret.”
