TRIBUTES have been paid to a Wye Valley police officer after his unexpected death.
Flags at Gwent Police were lowered to half mast in honour of PC Leighton Yhnell, who was based at Monmouth Police Station.
The town’s officers released a tribute to the former soldier on Saturday (February 17) on Twitter, calling him “one of the finest officers, who was based in Monmouth Police Station.”
“He had a heart of gold and always had a story to tell. The station is very quiet today without him here. Always in our thoughts and in our hearts.”
A fellow officer, who also served in the military before becoming a PC, added: “So privileged to have shared a beer with you and enjoyed ‘pulling up a sandbag’ to share stories of our time in the Army.”
Officers in Abergavenny, where PC Yhnell had also worked, added: “It is with great sadness today that we announce the unexpected death of one of our own.
“We’re all devastated and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this terrible time. Your shift is over. Rest in peace friend.”
Supt Matt Williams said: “Very saddened to hear this tragic news. Thoughts and prayers are with his family. Rest in peace #742.”
Another post said: “RIP PC Yhnell, once a hero definitely always a hero,” while PC Chris Smith said “RIP brother in blue,” and Dylan Hughes added “RIP PC Yhnell – a huge loss to the community.”
