FOREST-based Two Rivers housing association is working with wildlife experts to ensure that development proposals for Newent are not slowed up by slow-worms.

Two River has already gained outline planning permission for a two-acre mixed use development in Newent.

Now it has discovered that the location is already home to slow worms, an increasingly rare species of legless lizard. But the charity is making plans to accommodate the needs of business, older residents and wildlife, all on the one site.

Two River's chief executive Garry King said the not-for-profit community organisation would make sure that the slow worms didn't lose out.

"We are dedicated to improving the economy and the environment for local people, business and wildlife. We will employ the very best in wildlife expertise to ensure that the slow worms get a new home to meet their needs, while ensuring they don't slow up the opportunities for jobs and homes for local people," he said.

"Our new development is all about providing new opportunities for sustainable growth, jobs and prosperity for the area. High environmental standards are central to the project and we are planning to use (carefully planned) wildlife-friendly landscaping."

The proposed package will include eight purpose built high efficiency and energy frugal business units for rent to local companies, as well as plans for a much needed extra care development of 40 self-contained affordable apartments for older residents.

On site also will be a controversial new purpose built ultra-efficient low energy HQ for the organisation.
