MORE volunteer drivers are being sought to make sure elderly and housebound people living throughout the Forest of Dean receive a daily hot meal.

Organised by Age Concern, the cooks at Cinderford's Foxes Bridge Road kitchen turn out as many as 650 three course meals a week.

The hectic schedule requires a small army of volunteer drivers.

"It takes about two hours in the middle of the day and is a very worthwhile community service," explains Daphne Pearson.

She says drivers can choose which day or days they help and soon become part of a happy team.

"Meals are not just handed over at the door but are plated up for the client. It's a welcome service for the disabled and frail, and drivers get to know their clients who look forward to their visits," said Daphne.

"Some of our volunteers have been with us for years. They can pick the days they want to assist and many find the task is really rewarding as they make new friends and meet new people," she said.

Drivers are reimbursed at 45p a mile and with winter approaching Daphne says they are particularly keen to welcome anyone who drives a 4 x 4.
