DOG mess in the playing field and even the children's play area at Mitcheldean has led local councillors to declare war on unhelpful pet owners.

Now in an effort to stamp it out they have arrange for the Forest of Dean dog warden Malcolm Beddis to visit the problem area on a regular basis.

Parish council chairman Tony Pickthall has also asked all parishioners for their cooperation to clean up the area.

"Despite notices to owners, dogs are still fouling the playing field and children's play area, which is of extreme concern to footballers and young children who play in the field," said a spokesman.

"Unfortunately the playing field is by no means the only problem area for dog fouling in the village – numerous paths and roads in the village could be mentioned but May Meadow Lane by the junior school, used daily by young children, is a particular problem."

The drive to stop owners allowing their pets to foul the field and streets and to urge everyone to use 'poop scoops' and plastic bags is being backed up by posters.

And even as councillors and the dog warden met to launch the drive on the field, the youngsters from Mitcheldean Munchkins were out on the grass doing a sponsored Barnardos Toddle – highlighting how much the field is used by youngsters who might pick up serious infections from dog mess.
