THE MAYOR of Caldicot was among those turned away from a waste recycling centre after an explosive was discovered.
Cllr Alan Davies was hoping to get rid of some rubbish at the household recycling centre near Caerwent on Friday afternoon.
He told the Review: "We were told we couldn't go in because a bomb had been found."
Bomb disposal experts were called to the site after a device was found in a bag of garden waste at the site managed by waste company Viridor on behalf of Monmouthshire County Council.
A council spokesman said: "A member of the public left a bag of garden waste on the site that also contained a training grenade and some ammunition.
"When this was discovered, site staff ensured that the area was cleared and police were called to deal with the situation.
"Nobody was hurt and the site was re-opened later in the afternoon.
