I FEEL I must reply to Mr Winships' letter in the Review headed 'Dumping ground.'
I would like to put Mr Winship's mind at rest on a few inaccuracies. First the two sites put foward as possible sites in Lydney are identified as sites that might be suitable for small scale operations (such as transfer sites). There are no plans to build two waste sites in Lydney. In the consultation there are 13 sites in all, 10 of which are on the M5 corridor near Gloucester (larger sites) two sites in Lydney and one in the Cirencester area (smaller sites). A roadshow was held in the town for any interested parties to talk to the experts on this.
If Mr Winship had waited until the end ot the consultation period (end of November) he would have seen Lydney Town Council's response. At an extraordinary meeting of Lydney Town Council on Monday November 16, which was the earliest date possible, the council replied to the consultation as follows: Lydney Town Council objects to the possible waste sites in Lydney, the reasons being: Hurst Farm Site. This would lead to extra heavy goods vehicles using the A48, also the negative affect it would have on any future housing developments in that area.
The Industrial Estate site at Harbour Road: Again the extra heavy goods vehicles on the A48, also the impact on Harbour Road itself and the railway crossing. Also this site may affect the leisure potential of that area.
I urge the public to reply to the consultation which can be done on line on the Gloucestershire County Council website.
On a personal note as I am one who is a district and county councillor I can assure Mr Winship that my roots are in the Forest and I will always put the good of the Forest first. I wanted to become a county councillor to make sure that we get the most we can for our Forest of Dean.
Regarding the county councillors who are remote from their divisions I can only think of two from the Forest who don't live in the area they represent, but they live within a few miles, hardly remote.
Terry Glastonbury.
