A LEISURE centre has been closed all day (Monday, November 27) after a large water leak was detected.

Newent Community School and Sixth Form centre discovered the leak under the sports centre which they share with Freedom Leisure.

That led to the water supply to the sports centre and parts of the school to be turned off.

A statement from Freedom Leisure put out around 8am said: "We have had to take the action of closing all the centre until further notice. As soon as we have further information we will update this page.

"The school have contractors on site on Monday morning and the area manager will be receiving an update from the school which we will then feed back to you.

"We will if possible see if we can open parts of the dry side of the centre on Monday, but as of yet cannot guarantee this.

"We apologise for the inconvenience this is causing but please be assured we will keep in regular communication with the school and keep everyone updated on the progress."

An update later said they were planning to reopen later this afternoon.

"Contractors are now on site and the leak has been detected. There is a fair amount of work that needs to be carried out and they have additional workforce at the site to help out," they said.

"The contractors are confident that the leak can be fixed today, so Freedom Leisure Newent plans to re-open all areas at 4pm today. Please look out for updated posts on the Freedom Leisure Newent Facebook page."

The school opened as usual this morning, with a statement saying: "We have been made aware of some confusion on social media as to whether the school is open or closed.

"Therefore, we would like to confirm that we will be open as usual Monday, 27 November. Please share this message."
