THE primary school in Newnham-on-Severn has launched its own walking bus as a part of a national campaign to get more youngsters and their carers to walk to and from school.

St Peter's has set up the scheme with the help of Sarah Avery at the county council's road safety unit.

"Walking buses are devised to enable children to walk safely to school even when parents have other commitments," said spokesperson Siobhan Smith.

"Children wait at designated 'bus stops' on the route to school and are picked up by volunteer adults who ensure they arrive safely and on time.

"Children learn better road safety skills, arrive at school alert and awake, and are encouraged to walk with the resultant health benefits. Hopefully traffic congestion around the school gate will also be eased."

"Wave if you see us," she adds. "If the scheme is a success by the end of summer term you may see a lot more of us!"
