WE'RE getting better....that's the verdict of Aylburton's reserve team captain Alex Ball after his team went down to a late goal scored on the break by Redbrook.

"I thought we had them under the cosh. We were pressing really hard, but Redbrook are not a bad side and they caught us out as we went for the winner. They chipped our defence and caught us on the break," said Ball.

Second from bottom is not a position Aylburton's second string players are used to. Having enjoyed two successive promotions they are finding it difficult to adjust to life in Division 1.

But skipper Ball says he is positive his team will stay there.

"I reckon we can finish around midtable. We struggled to get 11 or 12 at the start of the season but we now have a stronger squad with players returning from injury. All we need now is a bit of luck," he adds.

Ball says demands from the club's senior team, who play in the Northern Senior League, will always mean life will be difficult in Division 1. But he is convinced his squad is now strong enough to stay there.

He says midfielder Danny Hughes – the scorer on Saturday – is "on fire" with a dozen goals to his credit. while Ben Mayo has also been playing particularly well. "He's not a flash player but a real grafter who gets stuck in," says Ball.

While the league has so far been a struggle the club's performances in the Hospital Cup have been excellent. Following a 4 - 2 win over Longhope they are now in the final stages of the competition.
