EMPTY promises...the two words sum up Westbury's season of frustration as once again they conspired to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in one of the rare games to escape the frost last Saturday.
"The problem is we can't score tries. The forwards are doing well but the backs are not clicking at the moment. We are full of promise but that's as far as it goes," says club chairman Ken Boulton.
Boulton watched Westbury's forwards knock the stuffing out of high-flying Old Cryptians, the county second division's second-placed team.
But forward power alone was not enough and Westbury's enthusiastic supporters could only watch with increasing frustration as Cryptians, who played second fiddle for most of the second-half, went into the interval with a 14- 10 advantage.
"Both Cryptian scores were breakaways, the first from inside their own 22. It was annoying but that's what happens when you don't take your chances," said Bolton.
The rest of Westbury's performance was annoyingly promising but though they continued to dominate the only score of the second-half was a penalty by Luke Sterry.
Earlier he had converted a try by Pete Cuthburt scored from a rolling maul, and kicked his first penalty goal.
Boulton takes encouragement from the performances of Westbury's young players and named loose head prop Toby Feirn as man-of-the-match. He said fullback Dan Long played with plenty of commitment and there were good performances from Luke Sterry, Matt Scott, Craig Higgins, Dale Garside and Will Boulton.
There was praise to for Jez Chandler who had to take over as hooker from the injured Boulton.
"It was a brave move for a back to volunteer to go and play in a position where the real rugby is played," said Boulton.
