RESIDENTS in Lydney's Allaston Road are up in arms at a plan to change the name of their road.

"It has been suggested that for historic reasons in should be changed to Allaston Mesne Road. It's a nonsense and everyone here is angry at the proposal," said resident Dennis Green.

Mr Green has handed in a petition opposing the idea to the Town Council signed by all but a handful of people living in the road.

"Everyone is objecting. It seems such a silly thing to do especially at a time when the council has just hiked the council tax up. You would think they could find something better to spend our money on," said Mr Green.

Mr Green said that the move would lead to massive inconvenience.

"It is not as simple as it sounds. It will mean changing driving licences and passports and people who run businesses from home or have their own headed notepaper printed will be put to a lot of unnecessary expense," he said.

And historically, he said, there was nothing to justify the move.

A district council spokesman said Lydney Town Council had been approached with the idea of changing the name and had agreed in principle subject to the proper consultation with those living in the area.

But no-one had responded to the notices until the final date for objections had passed.

"I'm sure that because of the strength of public feeling this matter will be put on hold for further discussion," he said.
