DISABLED Doug Gurney is fed up with both the rogues who have pinched bits of his car and the police, who he thinks should be doing more to find the culprits.

It all started last Friday night when Mr Gurney, who walks with crutches and is expecting to have a second hip replacement soon, had his hub caps stolen while his car was parked outside his home in Oakfields, Coleford..

"I had a gut feeling that they would be back for the wheels, so I stayed up all Saturday night checking my car about every 30 minutes," he told the Review.

"Despite that the next morning I went outside to discover that they had stolen two wheels.

"After ringing Coleford and Lydney police stations for about 30 minutes and not being able to get hold of anyone I decided to walk to Coleford police station and report it."

According to Mr Gurney he was then told he should not have bothered coming to see the police – he could have telephoned instead! But he said he was even more astonished when he asked if a police officer would be calling to have a look at the scene of crime.

"I was answered with 'No – what's the point? What do you expect us to find?'" he said.

"What I expected was for them to come and take the evidence – two old wheels and an iron bar – away, and ask neighbours if they saw anything."

And he says he can only feel sympathy for Norfolk farmer Tony Martin, jailed for shooting a burglar.

"I can't sleep at night now ... I keep thinking they will be back again, so I lie listening for them," he said. "Because of my legs I really need the car.

"I have also heard that the police know who the thieves are and that there is drugs behind it but they cannot do anything without evidence. So why aren't they collecting evidence?"
