THE sister of a dad-of-four who was paralysed in a motorbike accident has launched a fundraising bid to buy him a specialist wheelchair.

Gareth Hughes from Lydney spent six weeks in a coma after breaking his back in an accident on the B4235 Chepstow to Usk road in May 2016.

The 36-year-old former doorman, who previously lived in Chepstow, says he is determined to walk again and is continuing his rehabilitation with the help of Bertie’s Caldicot Amateur Boxing Club in Sudbrook.

Now his sister Laura Hughes is appealing for funds to buy a £4,000 wheelchair to help her brother in his recovery, calling him “my inspiration”.

She has set up a Just Giving page, and says on it: “I am trying to help my brother to help raise him money to be able to get a new wheelchair to become more independent in himself.

“He had a bike accident just over a year ago but he is my inspiration. He has come so far in a year as me and my family didn’t know what way it was going to go.

“He is the strongest person I have ever known, and I would be really grateful if you could help me to help him.”

Gareth said doctors called him “the miracle man” after surviving the crash, and family and friends feared the worst until he pulled through.
