LOCAL is the name of the game for a border pub which is bucking the trend and pulling out all the stops to engage with the village and its community.

And by local, new landlords Lisa Pell and Alun Lewis at the Hostelrie in Goodrich mean everything.

That's local produce, local beer, local cider and support for local charities and groups – "We've got plenty of room" says Lisa. "All we ask is that you just buy a drink, even if its a lemonade."

The couple, who got together in Southampton saw the potential of The Hostelrie about a year ago.

"Produce around here on the borders is phenomenal," says Lisa. "And that's what really attracted Alun who has won awards for his cooking over the years. It's the produce and the beer and the cider which really made us decide to come to this area.

"As a chef, Alun is cooking with great produce and there are some amazing opportunities in this area. Phenomenal produce and all from local suppliers."

The beers and ciders are also sourced locally, contributing to the border economy.

Hereford Brewery, Spinning Dog (a micro-brewery in Hereford) and the Wye Valley Brewery all supply the pub, alongside Gwatkins and Broome Farm ciders (on the pub's doorstep) and May Cider: "A very exciting small and local cider maker" says Lisa.

Local bands are also welcome and will become a permanent feature of the pub.

"The talent locally is pretty amazing across the board," says Lisa. "From Ross to Monmouth there's everything from Rockabilly to folk to contemporary ranging from rock and roll to The Jam or U2 styles."

To cement their local credibility The Hostelrie is running a local food and cider festival next weekend from Friday (April 22) through to Sunday (April 24) featuring – you've guessed it – local musicians, local ales and local food including a demonstration of sausage making by master butcher Hancocks of Monmouth.
