TWO goals down and in danger of a shock home defeat, ambitious Whitecroft produced a polished final quarter display to win praise from manager Richard Howell.

Howell, back in charge at Whitecroft, has set his sights on winning promotion to the North Gloucester Premier League but says the ambition will not be achieved without considerable effort.

"It's not an easy division to win. There are other teams just as keen to win promotion as us so so it is very competitive. We have not lost a league game yet but we have probably lacked a bit of concentration in the cup matches so it was good to hit a bit of form late in the game against Newent," he said.

A slow start allowed Newent to make the early running. They took an early lead and then scored a second at the start of the second half.

But after that it was all Whitecroft. Keith Paterson, who began playing a wide role, moved infield to score the first. Adam Brown scored number two and then Paterson scored his second.

"They were not spectacular but well made footballing goals," said Howell.

Overall, Howell is pleased with his squad and says the club is fortunate to have a number of highly promising young players, among them Scott James who is presently injured. Top scorer to date is Lewis Frazer-Holland.

Premier League football remains the chief aim but Howell says a cup run would be welcome.
