THE Christian festival of Candlemas was celebrated at St John the Baptist Church in Ruardean on Friday (February 2).
Around 30 people from the village joined in a Christingle service, which was led by lay reader Tony Hughes.
Tony said: “Many people of all ages will be familiar with the Christingle service, but perhaps more familiar when it is held in preparation for Christmas Day. This service is a favourite of the village.
“The idea of the Christingle is a symbol to explain the true meaning of Christmas. It represents God’s world, creation and the light of Christ in that world and it dates back to 1747, originating in Germany.
“Candlemas celebrates a turning point – it’s the moment we take a last look at Christmas and the infant Jesus before turning towards the cross and Easter. It marks the turning from winter towards spring and the shifting from darkness to light.
“It is called Candlemas because it was the day that all the church’s candles for the year were blessed and on Candlemas night, many people place lighted candles in their windows.
“Hence the service involves many lit candles which we ask God to bless. Not to forget a carol or two.
“The collection from our service will be donated to the Children’s’ Society to join monies collected from all Christingle services across the country and individual contributions made throughout the year.”
