AT last we have a time set to re-open the old Wye Bridge at Chepstow.
This wonderful bridge must be preserved forever and I think the only way to attain this is to make it a World Heritage Site.
The history over the past 200 years must not be lost but kept alive for future generations of Chepstow.
When I first came to live in Chepstow in 1962 this bridge was the main South Wales to London route as well as the road to the Beachley ferry to Bristol and the West Country.
We have the history preserved from the time it was first opened to date.
At its opening it was the third largest cast iron arch road bridge to be built. Today it might be the only one left.
To make it a World Heritage Site would ensure the bridge’s life for our future and generations to come .
Living in Chepstow and overlooking the bridge on the Gloucestershire side, I have the advantage of seeing Chepstow Castle and the bridge every day from my house and count it as a privilege to see such history that we take for granted.
I hope that my letter might prompt both county councils to find out if the bridge might qualify as a World Heritage Site.
