A SERIES of workshops starts this weekend to develop a piece of community musical theatre celebrating the Wye Tour.

The lower Wye Valley is acknowledged as the birthplace of tourism and the two-day boat trip in the 1770s from Ross to Chepstow the first package tour.

The show will use the words written by the tourists, as well as poets mixed with music of the period.

Professionals will perform with amateurs and anyone who wants to join in is welcome.

Over a weekend of June 8 and 9 the show will replicate the Wye Tour, beginning in Ross on Saturday morning stopping at Goodrich and Symonds Yat during the day performing a piece appropriate to each place.  

During the day on Sunday there will be similar stops notably at Tintern the highlight of the tour.

On Saturday night at the Savoy Theatre in Monmouth, and on Sunday night at the Drill Hall in Chepstow the full show of the two day tour will be enacted.

Apart from the show weekend they will need to commit to a weekend of rehearsals on May 18 and 19.

Karl Daymond of OperaPlayhouse will be running a series of workshops on Saturday (April 20) between 10am and 1pm at the Savoy Theatre, Monmouth, Friday April 26, 7.30pm-9.30pm at the Mackenzie Hall, Brockweir and Friday May 10, 7.30pm-9.30pm at Goodrich village hall.
