CHEPSTOW was targeted by a crack squad of "street knitters" who left the tag Wye? as the only clue to their identity.
People walking through Place de Cormeilles in the rain were confronted with colourful spiders, pompons and catkin clusters hanging from trees, benches and the Palmer Community Centre.
A spokesperson for the Wye? yarn bombers said: "Wye? To bring a smile to the faces of people."
The group descended on Place de Cormeilles after dark last Thursday and "dressed" the area.
"We used old wool to make the items and it took 11 of us about 50 minutes to put up.
"There were some people in the community centre but fortunately they went out the other way as we were doing it."
Many people stopped on Friday morning to take pictures of the artwork.
Among them was Becky Lythgoe and her son Tobi who was on his way to school at The Dell.
Tobi said: "It's quite a surprise but it looks good."
Gillian Morgan, who was on her way to work at the O2 shop in High Street, said: "It's fantastic, it really brings a smile to your face.
"I've seen this sort of thing in Bristol but you'd never think it would happen in Chepstow.
"It's great work and so colourful on a wet Friday morning."
