THE prospect of re-opening the Wye Valley railway from Tidenham to Tintern is to be explored in greater detail.
The line, famed for its tranquillity and beauty, could be a "wonderful asset", said Michael Nott, the man who mooted the reinstatement of the line over two years ago.
But the idea hit the buffers when the Wye Valley Cycleway project emerged.
Now that scheme has been shelved, Mr Nott and fellow enthusiasts say the way is open for the railway project to become a serious consideration.
They plan to submit a 'Proposals Document' to local councils and other interested parties by the end of May.
Mr Nott told the Review: "The Wye Valley Railway Group now feels there is a better chance to reinstate the railway as far as Tintern, the ultimate aim being to run, once again, into Tintern Old Station."
He said the document would outline the scheme and its benefit to the community.
"The Wye Valley Railway Group feels that the scheme will add considerably to the prospects of Tintern and Chepstow both financially as well as environmentally.
"It is hoped it will reduce the number of car journeys along an already busy road as it will be able to put passengers into the heart of the valley from where they can cycle, walk or simply stroll in the environs of Tintern," he said.
The trackbed runs from Day House Quarry at Tidenham through the Tidenham tunnel to Tintern quarry and on to Tintern. If the scheme became a reality a new river crossing would be needed to enable Tintern station to be used.
Though it has not been used for many years, the line is already in place as far as Tintern quarry. And the tunnel has already been examined by an engineer who reported it as in good condition.
"Fundamentally the trackbed and track is in place. It could become a top class tourist attraction and a wonderful asset to the area," said Mr Nott.
He thought the railway could easily be run by two steam engines and two carriages with, perhaps, a diesel for maintenance work.
Mr Nott said the 'Proposals Document' would give an opportunity for people to discuss the project.
