AT ceremonies and services across the district communities turned out in force to honour their war dead.

Perhaps most encouraging of all was the turnout at Yorkley for a revived Remembrance ceremony after a lapse of several years.

Here, Captain Stephen Hunt of Viney Hill led the service and the Forest of Dean Brass provided music. Old soldier Bert Butson afterwards thanked the Review whose publicity helped their campaign gain momentum.

Also very pleased with their Sunday turnout were the people of Caerwent. Here the efforts of John Nettleship and Gareth Jones turned up the histories of soldiers named on the local memorial and rekindled interest in the sacrifices they represent.

Starting in 1992 Gareth researched military records and John gathered local information.

The stories started appearing in the community newsletter and later, with the help of the community council, a book was compiled. It is lodged in the local church and attracts great interest from visitors as well as locals.

Mr Nettleship said: "It has been a whole community effort. Many people provided me with information and photographs and I combined this with Gareth's research to produce the book.

"I heartily recommend other local communities to do the same. It is possibly to do with this work that attendance at our Remembrance service has increased in recent years."
