A HIGH impact sign to mark fatal crash sites in the Forest has been suggested by a driver shocked by reckless road users.

Stewart Robinson of Ruardean Hill, said he frequently witnessed examples of horrific driving on local roads and wanted to remind people about fatal accidents.

In the last four years around 40 people have died on Forest roads. The locations of many of the crashes are marked by flowers and tributes.

Mr Robinson said: "The other morning I was travelling on black ice at what I considered to be a fairly reasonable speed, given the road conditions.

"At least 10 people overtook me – we just don't seem to do anything about unsafe driving."

He suggests introducing a road sign similar to those seen at the side of roads in France, to mark blackspots where people have died.

"Could we not have a simple white circle or a similar symbol to show that with respect a person has lost their life here? It would be an almost constant, inoffensive reminder to us to drive a little more carefully," said Mr Robinson.

Jackie Green lost her son Ben in a road accident on the outskirts of Lydney in November 2007 and says she supports the scheme.

She said: "I don't know why they don't put up signs here – I've seen it in other countries and it really makes you think.

"As an alternative to having a sign to mark every spot, we could have one sign for each dangerous stretch of road. Sometimes the road layouts are at fault and a glance at a simple sign could make you aware that the road isn't as it seems. The right sign in the right place could make a huge difference"

Jimmy Martin, chairman of the road safety group Time and Place said: "It is good for people to remember that these accidents have happened, but if there were a sign it would have to be planned carefully. It would have to be designed so it was not distracting, and well publicised so people were expecting to see it. You would also need permission to put it up," he said.

"The victims' families must be consulted. Anything we can do to stop a family having to go through the pain of losing someone in a road accident is a good idea, but I think the best solution would be to ask the people of the Forest what they think."
