SAILING fans were in for a treat at the weekend as members of Lydney Yacht Club set sail for the May Day Cup races.

Spread across Saturday, Sunday and Monday sailors follow a route set by the tide and the weather to battle it out in the Severn.

Racers can use the results from any two of the three races for their points and the emphasis is on friendly sailing rather than competition.

Commodore Eric Witheridge said: "We did what we call a 'sausage', up as far as Sharpness and back to outside the club at Lydney. There were pretty good conditions on Saturday and Sunday."

Some of the boats decided to scuttle back across the back eddy and some decided to stick to the Sharpness side.

On Monday the weather changed and the higher winds meant members did work around the club rather than taking to the waves.

Commodore Witheridge said no one was too concerned about who won the race.

He said: "I don't know who won – it might have been me! We were just having fun and seeing the boats out on the water."
