A FATHER and son team from Chepstow laundry equipment firm HJ Weir took part in the Caribbean's biggest annual international motorsport event.

Rob and Ross Weir were among 101 crews from 15 countries in the Sol Rally Barbados 2012.

The pair, driving a professionally-built Subaru, exceeded expectations by coming second in their M8-A category and 39th overall.

Managing director Rob, 59, was the driver and son Ross, 29, also a director of the firm, was his co-driver.

They competed in blistering temperatures – intensified by fireproof clothing and helmets – in stages totalling more than 120 kilometres over two day.

Ross said: "You have to have absolute trust in each other.

"He has to trust me to reassure him about each stage of the rally, as well as getting the timing right so we don't incur any penalties."

Next in the team's calendar is the Woodpecker Stages Rally, Ludlow, where Rob will be driving their other rally car – a historic MK2 Escort - for the first time with experienced co-driver Shaun O'Gorman.

Ross will be co-driving the Subaru with rally driving champion Rob Smith.
