A DOUBLE gold medallist from Drybrook will be representing Great Britain at the Wheelchair Fencing World Cup in Germany this month.
Nineteen-year-old Piers Gilliver recently won not only two gold medals at the British Disabled Fencing Association's 2013 National Championships, but also silver. Now he will be taking on his next challenge in Malchow for a podium place against the world's top ranking wheelchair fencers.
Piers, who is a GB performance squad wheelchair fencer and currently ranked No 12 in the world of Epee, is coached by George Felletar at Wellington Swords in Somerset and by the GB coaches at national training.
He said: "Obviously my aim will be to achieve a podium place at this event, but my goal will be to ensure a last eight placing as per my training plan and to maintain my progression in the sport."
Although Gilliver has only been fencing for over a year he has already collected a fair few medals including bronze at Eger in Hungary and Warsaw, gold at the Junior World Championships in the U23s Men's Epee event and silver in the U23s Men's Cat A Foil in Warsaw during July 2013.
He now has his sights set on representing Great Britain at the Rio 2016 Paralympics.
"My first year of international competition has been a successful one and I am on target for having a realistic shot at qualification for Rio, although I have to say it is hard to believe that the Paralympics are now only two and a half years away," said Gilliver. "As a country, I think London 2012 is still fresh in our memories, I hope we can maintain the interest and support in both able-bodied and Para sport and carry it through to Rio 2016 and beyond to Tokyo 2020."
