CALDICOT Town under-16s side completed a cup double – thought to be the first time in the club’s history.

The side won both the Gwent County Cup and the Monmouthshire Junior Cup – which was added to the trophy for winning a futsul tournament in Swindon earlier in the year.

A fantastic season also saw them take runners-up spot in the Monmouthshire League.

The side, under head coach Conrad Kew and assistant Graeme Forehead, have been together since coming together at under-seven level and were also presented with the league’s ‘team of the year’ trophy by official Mr Derek Harris.

Both cup finals went to penalties with the Gwent County game against Fleur de Lys finishing 1-1 after extra time and the Monmouthshire Junior Cup against Malpas 2-2 after extra time.

The Gwent Cup final started with a two minute silence in honour of Caldicot Town club member Basil Packer who passed away the week before the game.

The game started at a high intensity with Caldicot taking the lead with a well-taken Jack Morgan goal in an evenly contested first half with both teams producing some excellent football in front of a large crowd at Risca.

The Valleys side came close on a few occasions and were rewarded with an equaliser after the break.

Caldicot’s James

Stevens was denied at the near post and Alex Edwards also had a good chance.

Town keeper Joe Jones denied Fleur a last-minute winner with a point blank save which came shortly after Jack Morgan missed a great opportunity to put Caldicot ahead.

Ieuan Kew, Alex Edwards, Gethin Foster, Matt Walker and Jack Morgan were on target with their penalties but it was centre-back, Euan Lee who kept his composure to score the decisive sudden-death kick.

Caldicot raced into a two goal lead in the Monmouthshire Cup final against a strong Malpas side thanks to Jack Morgan and Ieuan Kew.

A close range effort from Ben Donoghue was the closest that Caldicot came to extending their lead at Newport Stadium.

The Newport side was on top for most of the second half and clawed their way back into the game.

Spot kicks from Ieuan Kew, Alex Edwards, Gethin Foster and Matt Walker, plus a super save by goalkeeper Joe Jones was enough to deny Malpas and give Caldicot a magnificent victory in front of their jubilant Jubilee Way supporters.

Club spokesman Michael Stevens said: “Everyone at Caldicot Town Football Club is proud of their achievements and we are looking forward to next season.”
