A FINE game of football and a great day of fund-raising for local good causes ended in a narrow win for the former Aston Villa stars – and they would like to come back and repeat it all again next year!

Relaxing after the game – played in perfect conditions at Cinderford Rugby Club – Villa captain David Norton said his team had really enjoyed the occasion.

He said: "Those boys really gave us a game and they have looked after us so well. We would like to make this an annual thing if possible. The facilities were superb and we look forward to a rematch."

Motor Club captain Martyn Walby said his team had "done ourselves proud."

"When we came together five or six weeks ago a lot of the boys hadn't played for 20 or 30 years so I'm really pleased with how we played.

"We would like to thank John Finnigan and Julian Alsop – their quality stood out. Also we want to thank Andy Reid and Dave Bird who gave their time to train us and Cinderford Rugby Club who looked after us so well," said Martyn.

Against the run of play Villa opened the scoring when good approach work by Mark Kinsella and Gareth Farrelly put in David Norton.

A rasping shot by Adam Fowler levelled the score but Norton, who played superbly, scored Villa's second goal.
