LYDNEY'S Cricket Club's much anticipated game against Steve James' International team was played out in the clubhouse at the town's Recreation Trust ground on Sunday.

However, without a six being hit or a ball being bowled, the day - specailly organised to celebrate the club's 150th anniversary - was judged a huge success.

"There was no chance of playing but a number of Steve's team turned up to help us celebrate the event. It was an excellent day all round and much enjoyed by everyone," said club secretary Andrew Davis.

Steve James, who began his cricketing career at Lydney, was joined, among others, by the present Glamorgan captain Mark Wallace, the Glamorgan coach Matthew Mott and leading players Mike Powell and Gareth Rees.

"Though there was no chance the game would be played we very much appreciated they turned up to support the occasion and helped us make the most of the day," said Andrew.

There was, he added, an outside chance that the game could be rearranged.

Meanwhile, plans are well advanced for another special game when, on July 27, a Lydney X1 will play a Three Counties League X1.

"In its day the Three Counties League was very successful and involved all the leading clubs in the area. There were many memorable games and the league produced a number of outstanding players," said Andrew.

To add to the celebration a special limited edition print of a painting by former Gloucestershire and England star Jack Russell has been given to the club by former player Geraint Jones, the England wicket keeper who now plays for Kent.

"It is one of a special edition of just 25 and signed by Jack and a number of England players including Michael Vaughan.

"The club has also been give a bat signed by the England X1.

"Both items are creating plenty of interest and are being offered as prizes," said Andrew.

Copies of a special booklet giving a potted history of the club have also been produced. Costing £5, they are available from the clubhouse.
