UNDY Athletic got a confidence booster with a 3-1 win over neighbours Newport County in the first of their pre-season friendlies.

The home side adapted more quickly to the appalling conditions as torrential rain made the game look more like water polo at times.

Undy took an early lead through striker Jason Cave who found the target from close range.

The Blue Square Bet Conference side went further behind as Tom Hooper found the net with an acrobatic volley from a tight angle.

Newport kept themselves in the game with substitute Andrew Hughes scoring on 30 minutes but the home side kept the advantage going into the second half.

Hughes was again the score sheet as he deflected the ball into his net following a period of pressure after a free kick.

Undy's next home game is against UWIC on July 25 with a 6.30pm kick-off. There are more friendlies – at home to Taffs Well and Abercarn on July 28 and August 5 with a 3pm kick-off.

Newport YMCA will visit The Causeway on August 7 for a Gwent Senior Cup tie.
