A CREW from Monmouth School claimed victory over the old boys' boat to take the Phil Mathew Invitation Cup at the annual Monmouth Regatta.

The eights competition over 750m for the cup named after a former Monmouth School teacher and regatta commentator.

Old Monmothians were the holders but the youngsters claimed a sweet victory in a hard-fought race.

Some 400 boats took the Wye over two days in the event which is sponsored by Monmouthshire Building Society and dates back to 1931.

Teams included Monmouth Rowing Club, Haberdashers' Monmouth Schools for Boys and Girls, Monmouth Comprehensive School and Ross Rowing Club.

The regatta attracted 800 competitors from 32 clubs who took part in 297 head-to-head races.
