MY father, Laurie Hyett (pictured), was in the D-Day landings and came ashore with the transport, we believe on the second or third day and was at Lyon-sur-Mare.
He was given a certificate by Field Marshall Montgomery for outstanding good service and showing great devotion to duty. Only 200 were issued during the campaign.
He was transporting nitro-glycerine to the front line during the campaign. He said he had escorts but never saw them.
Later he was one of the first into Belsen concentration camp with supplies.
He was demobbed in 1947 and returned home and would often cry about what he had seen but never talk about it.
My sister and I had to get to know him. We were only little and so pleased to have a dad.
He was so kind and lovely. We still love him and miss him very much.
He passed away in 1985 and would have been 100 on June 2.
