IT wasn't meant to be this way. Blakeney had the three points in the bag; their chase for promotion was on. Harrow Hill ruined the party!
Blakeney manager Steve Oakey tells the story: "I was rubbing my eyes in disbelief. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. We had scored five goals in the first-half but then we let it slip."
Oakey, injured last season, is even threatening to make a comeback if his players don't improve!
He reckons his team could still be in with a shout of promotion but it all depends on their next two league games. "Before then we have a County Cup game in Gloucester and that will be difficult. But if we do win that one and then play well in the league the following week we could still be in with a shout. I want Saturday's defeat to be a wake-up call," he said.
It had been a fair season for Blakeney until the visit of bottom of the table Harrow Hill.
"It just proves you can't rely on previous results. On paper we were the favourites but it didn't work out that way. We create lots of chances but don't always take them. There were previous examples of this when we played at Bream and Westbury but on Saturday we reached the bottom of the barrel. Frankly, we were rubbish," he said.
Oakey says Blakeney's mix of young and old players is a good one.
"Players like Neil James add a lot to the team and give good support to the younger players but we must make more of our chances," he said.
Top scorer Andrew Rowles hit a hat-trick on Saturday with other goals coming from Ben Rudd and Joe Gaston. Rowles' goals takes his total for the season to 12.
But it was Harrow Hill's day and Oakey admitted they deserved their win.
"We didn't measure up and we were rubbish. It was as simple as that," he said.
