AN OAK tree has been planted near St Briavels Castle to mark the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt.

It is one of a number across the country in areas with links to Monmouth-born Henry V and the famous battle of October 1415.

The oak, which was planted on Saturday at The Tump, comes from the royal estate at Windsor and has been funded by St Briavels Parish Council, the Woodland Trust and Agincourt 600.

The tree was planted by Cllr Chris McFarling of St Briavels Parish Council and Sharon Thomas of the Woodland Trust.

They were joined by Pete Hood of Newnham Archery Club, Roly Thomas of St Briavels Castle and Dave Brown from Cosmeston Manor Archers near Penarth who were dressed in period costume.

St Briavels is the only English stop on the new Agincourt Wales Trail which will be officially launched this week.

It runs from Caldicot Castle, through St Briavels and Monmouth to Trecastle in mid-Wales.
