MORE than 600 students and staff of Lakers School in Coleford took on their longest-ever sponsored walk, covering some 18km – 11 miles – around the Forest.
Their route took them along the River Wye to Symond’s Yat, where many selfies were taken from the famous viewpoint.
All the money raised will go back to helping students, either funding in and out of the classroom.
Part of the proceeds will also go the Year 11 prom and many of the final year students, as is traditional, turned out in fancy dress from Alice in Wonderland to horror-inspired costumes.
Organiser Mark John said: “Running the sponsored walk is no small undertaking, but is no doubt a great opportunity to be at the heart of our school community and be able to provide a valuable out-of-the-classroom experience for the students, all of which would not be possible without such a great team of staff.”
Year 10 student, Arron Giles said: “The sponsored walk this year for me was an amazing day.
“It was fun just spending time with my friends and speaking to people who I wouldn’t usually speak to. We also got out in the woods, with fresh air and a bit of fitness.
“It was such a hard walk going up the steps (to Symond’s Yat but when we got to the viewpoint it was a lovely view. Then on the way back it was just a nice cool calm walk back to school.”
Year Nine student, Kieran Smith added: “We were doing great things such as picking up the rubbish, reducing pollution and looking after the environment.
“It is also a good way for everyone to show a good impression of Lakers School.”
