SCHOOLS across the Forest seized on the opportunity to celebrate their favourite fictional characters on Thursday (March 7) as they got into the spirit of World Book Day.

Staff at Dean Academy in Lydney came dressed in outfits that ranged from Victorian garb to futuristic sci-fi gear and magical robes, and headteacher, Tom Beveridge, said: “It was fantastic to see students’ expressions as they were faced by Wolverine, Oliver Twist and Professor McGonagall.

“The staff really brought World Book Day to life and we hope this can help to encourage reading by our students. Thank you to everyone for their efforts.”

Fun activities were organised all day at the school, including a quiz for students about characters portrayed by the teachers and support staff . There was also a special ‘read along’ story in instalments.

At Woodside School in Ruardean, all the children and staff came dressed as book characters and children were able to move around the school, listening to stories read by teachers and parents

Family worker, Gina Matthews, said: “It was a lovely morning. The children and staff wore some amazing outfits and thoroughly enjoyed the day.”
