A CRISIS which might have spelled the end for Cinderford's long-standing distinguished Royal British Legion branch has been averted by a last-minute move.

Previous chairman Alex Simonds, who had been looking forward to a restful retirement, stepped in when the branch received no nominations for chairman at its AGM.

"Without a chairman we would not have been able to form a committee and carry on the branch," secretary Mrs Heather Boyle explained.

At risk, she said, was a long and successful history, although the numbers of members were now dwindling as in most Legion branches, with the average age now in the 80s.

Even with the new committee the Legion branch faced severe difficulties in the future and perhaps needed to reinvent itself to attract membership – even though it was open to forces people of all ages.

It would also be encouraging if more of the present members supported the branch and its functions.

"The coming year could prove a critical time. It would be such a pity if we closed as we are so much a part of the community," said Mrs Boyle.

The crisis arose when last chairman Keith Knight stood down. He has accepted the appointment of vice president of the branch and promised his continuing support.

Mr Simonds said that in the 80th anniversary year of the Royal British Legion and of the Cinderford branch it would be deeply regrettable to see activity in Cinderford cease.

He welcomed Mr Ian Davies as new vice chairman.

•The Remembrance Day parade and service in Cinderford will take place on Sunday November 11 at 11am with a service in the evening at St John's. A Poppy Dance is to be held on Saturday November 17 at 8pm at the Causeway Club.
