ELLWOOD buried near neighbours Broadwell to cement their place close to the top of the County League – but they know teams above them must slip up badly if they are to have any hopes of promotion.
Reflecting on a successful season, secretary Ian Edwards said the his club was well prepared if the chance came along.
"You don't know what is round the corner but at this level of football you have to try and progress or you die," he says.
And Edwards is not only commenting on progress on the field. Ellwood have plans for a new clubhouse – it's a question of dotting i's and crossing t's, he says.
"If we are going to progress you need the facilities so it is important to make progress on and off the field,"
Ellwood have lost only once at home this season and were never threatened by Broadwell who are second from bottom and now is serious trouble.
"We played very well. The result was wrapped up early on and we were leading 4-0 at half-time. It was one-sided really and we missed a lot of scoring chances," he said
Mark Saunders and Matt Timmins were outstanding in a good team performance.
Timmins scored once in each half and Danny Clarke also netted two. Clark Barrow also scored.
For Broadwell, Phil Delaney hit a consolation goal in the final minute.
Ellwood are enjoying life in the County League. A blip when they lost two games on the trot and a couple of drawn matches have put them out of the race for promotion but they have an important GFA semi-final game to look forward to later this month when on March 25 they have home advantage against fellow County League team Patchway.
"There are two Western League and two County League teams left in the competition and no-one from the Hellenic League. We have beaten Tuffley and Bishop's Cleeve to reach the semi-finals which gives some indication of the standard of the County League at present," said Edwards.
