THE Forest has raised nearly £30,000 this year for the fight against cancer.

The figure was announced at the Relay for Life on Saturday (June 30).

As well as helping Cancer Research in its work, it was also revealed that Relay for Life Forest of Dean needs someone to step forward to replace Chair Julie Drew who is retiring from the role.

Julie told the teams at the Dean Academy: “Up to today, we are on just under £30,000 so you need to give yourselves a massive round of applause.

“With this money we can fund vital trials to beat cancer.

“This is the 14th year (of Relay for Life Forest of Dean) and so many of you have supported us for so many years.”

The relay brings together survivors of cancer and people whose families or friends have been affected by it.

The event started at noon on Saturday with a warm-up led by Kim Harris of Team Numpty.

Survivors led the relay on the first lap of the 24-hour event.

The most moving part of the relay happens at sunset with the candle of hope ceremony with each flickering light having a special meaning to individuals, families or friends.

Teams at the Forest relay were also given an insight into what all their hard work makes possible.

Dr Anna Chambers, a Cancer Research-funded scientist at the University of Bristol spoke about her work.

She told them: “Your commitment to helping us raise essential funds for research is helping us beat cancer sooner.

“My research group is interested in the processes that occur in cells helping to keep the genome stable and the things that go wrong when cancer happens so we get better knowledge and understanding of these mechanisms.

“Hopefully this will help us identify potential new targets for cancer therapies and develop more targeted treatments for specific types of cancer or patients.

“Many of the treatments currently used for cancer are harsh and blunt instruments and if we can deliver more personalised treatment, not only will the success rate of treatment improve but it will be more gentle for patients.

“My work, and the work of other cancer researchers in the UK, simply wouldn’t be possible without supporters like you.

“With your support, Cancer Research UK will have more breakthrough moments and improve the way we detect, treat and prevent cancer.

“We can’t do our research without amazing people like you.

Forest MP Mark Harper added his thanks to those taking part, the organising committee and scientists such as Dr Chambers.

He added: “For a town and area this size to raise the money we raise every single year is a massive tribute to you all.

“You make me proud to be Member of Parliament for Forest of Dean.
