HISTORIC Scarr Bandstand, near Sling, could be earmarked for a facelift and rejuvenation, under plans being proposed by West Dean Parish Council.
The parish council has called a public meeting to decide the future of the structure.
The bandstand was used for many years as a platform for local brass and silver bands to perform - and was particularly favoured as a venue for the annual hospital Sunday concerts - which aimed to raise money for local hospitals and medical services, although the need for these events faded out after the NHS was formed in 1948.
Dave Kent, Clerk to the West Dean Parish Council, told the Review: “The Scarr Bandstand has been neglected and unused for some time. The site is a handsome semi-circular stone open structure, set in a natural amphitheatre, but will need some undergrowth clearance and stone cleaning to restore it to be used again as a music and performing arts venue.
“The Forestry Commission has generously offered to clear the site, providing that a community use can be identified for it. If not, then it may be demolished.
“We are now seeking to establish whether there is any community support for the restoration of this landmark.
“If is goes ahead, then it would be a great venue for summer concerts. It is in a forest situation, in a natural depression, and the semi-circular bandstand provides great acoustics.
“We hope to restore the site as a big arena for music, theatre and other arts events, in a special part of the Forest.”
The public meeting to decide the future, or fate, of the bandstand, is to be held at Sling Recreation and Social Club, Milestone Walk, Sling, on Wednesday October 7, at 7pm.
