COLEFORD Hard of Hearing Club says a warm welcome awaits all new members who would like to socialise with other people who have hearing difficulties.

Around one person in six suffers with some form of hearing loss which can leave them feeling isolated.

Because the disability is not visible, many who have difficulty hearing are not always understood and can be mistaken for being rude when they simply do not hear. Some environments are harder for people to hear in, which makes many reluctant to go out of their homes.

Forest-based housing association Two Rivers says it realises that its residents and other members of the community would benefit significantly if they could attend a community group that offers support for those in similar circumstances.

The Coleford Deaf and Hard of Hearing Club does just that.

The club was set up 20 years ago to help those in the community deal with their disability together. They do this by making each meet a festive one, with fun and games but also illustrating the serious side of hearing loss by inviting professionals from various organisations to speak to the group. The last meeting involved a lot of pancake-eating and coffee-drinking, along with the usual chit-chat and laughs.

Two Rivers Housing resident, Pauline Edmondson from Staunton, is a volunteer, having joined five years ago. She says she is delighted by the sense of positive community spirit within the group each week and is eager for the group to expand to offer companionship to more people.

"There are around 25 members, mostly elderly, who look forward to our weekly meetings for a few hours away from home where they can enjoy a cup of coffee and a good natter before the session starts.

"I love being an active member of the group. It gave me new things to focus on when I joined and I haven't looked back. We welcome anyone who would like to come along. The more the merrier!" Pauline said.

Don't suffer in silence – meet the group on Monday mornings, except the first Monday of the month. Transport can be arranged for a small charge for anyone who needs it.
